History of Mahjong

Mahjong originated in China over 2000 years ago. It is believed that in the court of King Wu was a beautiful girl that sought to amuse herself by inventing the game with pieces of carved ivory and bamboo. She played this game with her maids but it is unsure of the exact rules but each player built a wall of 34 tiles with the mah-jong set.

For centuries it remained strictly a game for the royal class and beheading was the fate awaiting any commoner who dared to play mah-jongg. After 1000 years, in 500AD the ban was lifted. In the 1920's mah-jongg was introduced to the US by Joseph babcock who copyrighted the name and introduced a set of rules.
